Today, nearly 3.5 million Californians are age 65 and older. With the Baby Boom generation nearing retirement, the demand for quality affordable senior housing will soon be far greater than ever before. BRIDGE is well prepared to meet this challenge, having developed more than 2,000 senior apartments and condominiums. These homes have allowed thousands of low-income seniors to continue to live comfortably near family and friends in the communities where they worked hard for many years and raised children. By linking residents to important services, BRIDGE takes a comprehensive approach to senior housing. Each BRIDGE development is designed with special "senior-friendly" features and community amenities, and is conveniently located near public transportation, shopping, and neighborhood resources. Mabuhay Court in San Jose, for example, includes a neighborhood senior center, complete with a dining facility and medical and social services, in addition to 96 affordable apartments. BRIDGE is currently partnering with the Institute on Aging (IOA) in San Francisco to build 120 very affordable apartments as new floors above the IOA’s impressive senior care facility. Residents will have access to adult day care, case management, and an Alzheimer’s center. With the support of the City of Pleasanton, BRIDGE worked with nonprofit senior care provider Eskaton to build affordable assisted living with 105 apartments: 86 for assisted living and 19 for residents suffering from dementia.
