In 2014, Faiza and her family were living in cramped one-bedroom apartment in East Oakland. It was in terrible shape, with roaches, no heat and windows that didn't work.

Making an impact

Dust blew in from the outside, triggering severe asthma attacks for her oldest daughter. But the biggest scare was when both children were diagnosed with lead poisoning. A county health official ran a test and found lead everywhere in the peeling paint. Faiza and her husband, who works as a wholesale stock clerk, started looking for a better, yet still affordable, place to live.

Their family was the first to move into BRIDGE's Terraza Palmera, not far from the old apartment but like another world, she says, with lots of grass and safe play areas for the children.

The new home has made a huge difference to the family's health. "We're not sick all the time," she says. Tests show that the girls no longer have lead poisoning. And her daughter's asthma attacks are a thing of the past.

  • Terraza Palmera is the affordable family component of St. Joseph's Campus, an award-winning multigenerational development in Oakland.

  • Faiza's daughter is thriving in a new, healthier home.

"I'm grateful to BRIDGE for giving us an opportunity to live in a clean, nice place"
